A Note on Name Spellings
Name spellings on this site are exactly as they are found in records so that you can see when and how the names changed. Church records were written in Latin, so names were spelled different then they are now. As time passed the Latin spellings changed to the Italian spellings which most of us are familiar. An example of this is the Latin "Joseph" became the Italian "Giuseppe."
Different spellings of names can also be attributed to most people in Sicily not being able to read or write prior to 1900. This is the same process involved in the myth that names were "changed" at Ellis Island.
When you are illiterate, the spelling of your name is a function of how you pronounce it, how the person doing the writing hears it, and how the writer THINKS it should be spelled.
The Patriarch and Matriarch
The Patriarch and Matriarch of the Interlicchia family in Valguarnera were Placidi INTERLIZZI and Francesca LoIACONA. Their Son Joseph Interlizzi was Born about 1668. We still do not know where the above 3 were born, or when Joseph moved to Valguarnera. Joseph was not on the 1636, 1652 or the 1681 Valguarnera Tax Census (Called the Riveli), so he most likely moved to Valguarnera between 1682 and 1687. Don't forget that Valguarnera was not founded until 1628.
The First Marriage — 6 May 1687
Joseph INTERLIZZI, born about 1668, d.28 Dec 1738, married Laurentia Paula MORDENCA, b.21 Apr 1675, d.26 Oct 1726, in the Valguarnera Caropepe Mother Church, Saint Cristoforo. Paula was born 21 Apr 1675 and died 26 Oct 1726, both in Valguarnera. Paula's Parents were Vincenzo and Livia LAMATINA who were married 1 Jun 1667.
In the actual marriage record Joseph and his father's name are spelled Interlizzi, but in the index for this record Joseph's name is spelled Interliggi. A probable reason is the index was not made until 1710, and was written by a different priest then the one who wrote the 1687 marriage record. Also by 1710, as you will see below, the spelling of the last name changed.

Above dates are mostly Baptism Dates which are usually on the date of birth, or within two days after.
The Second Marriage — 8 Jan 1727
On 26 Oct 1726 Giuseppe's wife, Paula Mordenca, died in Valguarnera. On 8 Jan 1727 Joseph INTERLICCHIA married Rosa VALENTI in the Valguarnera Caropepe Mother Church, Saint Cristoforo. Rosa was born about 1681 & died 20 Jul 1742, both in Valguarnera. Rosa's Parents were Michele and Angela Profeta.
We know this is Joseph Interlizzi because on his 1727 marriage record he has the same parents as on his 1687 marriage record, and is shown as the widower of Paula. His name on this 1727 record is clearly spelled Interlicchia. Shortly after this date, the names of Joseph's children began to be spelled this same way. This is the beginning of today's "Interlicchia" name. The name did not exist prior to 1727.
